CITI was founded in 1983 as a specialist university institute emerging from Cranfield University, bringing academic research together with the practical needs of industry. Its creation was shaped by the shared interests of six major users of change management at the time: British Aerospace, British Gas, British Petroleum, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless, and Longman.
CITI operates as a private university, with a remit to develop organisational capability through research‑led learning, consultancy, and applied practice — a status that remains unique in the project, programme, and change management profession.
Originally established as the Cranfield Information Technology Institute, CITI was created to go beyond methodologies and focus on how change is successfully implemented in real organisational environments.
