Practical project planning

The key techniques course begins by examining and reviewing in detail what is meant by a project plan, how the products are derived from the project objective and using a product breakdown structure.

This then allows an understanding of how the products will be accepted once they are produced, how this can be achieved and how measurable criteria can be derived and agreed.

Once the products are understood the derivation of the work breakdown structure from the product set is covered before discussing how the products are managed using baselines, configuration management and change control across the whole product set. This will allow the development planning to produce the schedule, considering all the constraints that are normally faced.

Finally schedules are explored to see how they can be accelerated and the effects this has on the product set.

Who is it for?

Do you need to create product breakdown structures for projects?  Are you responsible for project planning?  Do you need to be able to evaluate project plans?  Are you a project manager?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, this course is for you.

What will I gain?

Product planning is a key tool for gaining clarity of the scope of a project and is an essential first step in getting achievement based monitoring. Following this workshop you will be able to apply this skill in your organisation and focus on the key techniques to remove the barriers to effective application.

Key topics covered

  • What is a plan
  • Defining the product set
  • Defining acceptance
  • Deriving the Work Breakdown Structure
  • Controlling the products
  • Change control
  • Managing within constraints

Course approach

The approach consists of short lectures, together with case work that builds through this two day master class. You will work in syndicate groups on the planning and management of a case study that exercises the principles discussed in the lectures. A high proportion of time is spent on using the tools discussed to ensure a thorough understanding of their practical application is gained by all participants.

Duration

2 days.
