Creating and validating estimates

In most projects finger-in-the-wind, or guesses, are used to determine costs, manpower requirements and task durations.

These are simply inadequate in today’s complex project environment. The ability of those with project delivery responsibilities to produce good estimates is essential and this master class is totally focused on this vital activity.

Who is it for?

Do you need to create estimates for projects?  Are you a project manager who needs to validate estimates?  If you are involved in project estimating this course is for you.

What will I gain?

Following this key techniques course you will understand the components of a valid estimate and you will know how to estimate activities, build a project cost estimate and run a facilitated estimating workshop for your project team.

Key topics covered

  • What is an estimate
  • How to make valid estimates
  • Tools and techniques
  • How to determine project duration
  • How to run a facilitated workshop
  • When to estimate
  • Practical exercises
  • Tutored feedback sessions

Course approach

The day starts with a short exercise to illustrate the difficulties we all face in making valid estimates. Interactive lectures are used to systematically explain the process and techniques. These are reinforced by seven practical exercises, some conducted individually and others in teams.

Tutored feedback from the exercises is given, along with solution notes, and the relevant learning outcomes are highlighted. The final exercise is conducted in syndicates and reinforces the lessons learned during the day. The lectures are backed up by a comprehensive delegate workbook containing the slides used in the lectures, space for delegate notes and detailed supporting reference text.

Duration

1 day.
