Establishing a PMO

Reviewing the literature suggested a number of factors that needed investigation. By auditing the practices and procedures of more than 40 highly regarded PMOs, as well as a number of less successful ones, we developed a way of identifying and classifying appropriate PMOs for different organisations, determined by their level of maturity and their ‘culture’.

We translated this into ways of structuring (and restructuring) or establishing PMOs to great effect. The initial research has been extended to allow us to profile the personnel that should lead and staff the different types of PMOs, resulting in our PPSO profiling tool set.  This means that we can set up a PMO, assess, select, recruit or develop the most competent team and leave it effective, typically within 3 months.
